Most skincare actives are named for what they do. This one is named for where it lives — and the two turn out to be the same thing.
If you’ve seen “pink microalgae” or Dunaliella salina on an ingredient list and wondered what it’s doing there, the short version is: it’s an antioxidant with an unusually good origin story. The longer version is worth telling, because with this ingredient the biology is the explanation.
01 What It Is
Dunaliella salina is a single-celled green microalga — a halophile, meaning it thrives in extreme salt. It’s found in hypersaline lagoons and salt flats around the world: the pink evaporation ponds of Torrevieja in Spain, the Camargue in France, salt lakes across North Africa and Australia. These are some of the harshest, brightest, saltiest environments on the planet, and this alga is one of the very few living things that flourishes in them.
You may have seen it described as “pink microalgae.” That pink is the point — and the survival mechanism behind it is what makes the ingredient interesting.
02 The Survival Story
A salt lagoon under strong sun is a punishing place to be a cell. The light is intense, the salinity is extreme, and there’s nowhere to hide. Most organisms simply can’t cope with that combination of solar and oxidative stress.
Dunaliella salina copes by making its own protection. Under stress it produces large amounts of carotenoids — the antioxidant pigments that give the alga (and its lagoons) their characteristic colour. These molecules absorb light and neutralise the reactive species that intense sun generates, letting the cell survive conditions that would destroy it otherwise.
That is the whole reason it’s in skincare. An organism that evolved a portable antioxidant system to survive extreme light is a logical place to look for an antioxidant active. The extract captures that chemistry.
A note on how we describe this. It’s tempting to call this “sun protection,” and you’ll see other brands do it. We won’t — the carotenoids here are antioxidants, not UV filters, and they don’t replace sunscreen. What they support is the skin’s resilience against oxidative and environmental stress, which is a different and more honest claim.
03 Colorless Carotenoids: The Useful Detail
Here’s the technical point that makes this ingredient genuinely clever, and it’s one most write-ups skip.
Carotenoids are wonderful antioxidants, but most of them are intensely coloured — think of beta-carotene’s deep orange. That colour is a problem in a facial serum: it tints the formula and can tint the skin. Which is why, for all their antioxidant power, coloured carotenoids are hard to use at meaningful levels in leave-on skincare.
Dunaliella salina offers a way around this. It produces two colorless carotenoids — phytoene and phytofluene — which are the biosynthetic precursors to the coloured ones. Because their molecular structure absorbs light in the UV range rather than the visible range, they carry antioxidant activity without the orange tint. You get the benefit of a carotenoid in a form that stays clear in an oil serum. That’s the specific reason this extract works where others don’t.
They’re also notably stable — resistant to degradation in ways that some other antioxidants (vitamin C among them) are not. In a formula that pairs the two, that stability is complementary: one antioxidant that acts readily, one that holds up over time.
04 The Antioxidant & Anti-Glycation Angle
The reason a stress-surviving alga is interesting for skin comes down to two related jobs: neutralising oxidative stress, and slowing glycation.
Dunaliella salina and its colorless carotenoids have been studied for their antioxidant activity and, more specifically, for a role in glycation — the slow reaction in which sugar stiffens the collagen and elastin that give skin its structure. Antioxidant support is one of the reasonable, research-aligned ways to address the glycation pathway while it’s still in progress, since oxidative conditions accelerate the formation of the advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) that stiffen the skin’s matrix over time.
That’s the thread worth following, and it’s a genuinely useful thing to understand on its own terms — independent of any one product.

05 Will It Clog Pores?
A fair question for anyone acne-prone, since this is often delivered in an oil base. The Dunaliella salina extract itself is not considered comedogenic — it’s used at low percentages and isn’t a pore-clogging material.
The more useful answer, though, is that comedogenicity is a property of the whole formula, not one ingredient. What matters for breakouts is the carrier oils and the overall composition.
